CHAPTER 3: OPPORTUNITY

“Your girlfriend is hot.” Marc bent over the glossy color photo of Gabrielle.

“Very hot,” Toby agreed. The five special shots had arrived in today’s post. He’d studied every detail during the half hour since he arrived home from school and collected them from the mail box.

Marc had tapped on the bedroom window five minutes ago and broken Toby’s concentration. He stuffed four of the photos back in the envelope and tucked it behind the books on his shelves before he went to the foyer to buzz Marc in.

Now, the two of them sprawled on Toby’s gritty bedroom floor, studying the fifth picture.

That photo showed only Gabrielle’s head and shoulders. Any fool could tell she was naked but the view ended at the point where her boobs started swelling.

Toby angled the lamp to lighten the November afternoon gloom and tapped Gabrielle’s candy-floss hair. “She’s also very fond of pink.”

“Pink.” Marc repeated the word as though it were new to him. “It looks good on her. Man, you must miss her very much. When will you see her again?”

Again?

Toby blinked. Somehow, Marc had jumped to the conclusion that Gabrielle and he had met in the real world. No need to confuse him with the truth that all their encounters had been virtual.

“Christmas, probably. The folks want to go somewhere and I’m pretty sure I’ve talked them into Amsterdam.”

He hadn’t started his campaign yet but he was confident he’d succeed.

“Lucky you.” Marc sighed deeply and his breath blew a clump of house dust back under Toby’s bed.

“When I had that girlfriend on Skagen, I hated being apart.” Marc stared wistfully at Gabrielle’s photo. “It is not funny, having a girlfriend where you can’t touch her whenever you want.”

“Not ideal,” Toby agreed. “But Gabrielle’s worth it.”

“I believe you. Still, long distance relationships are not for me. I will find my next girlfriend in my own neighborhood.”

Marc passed the photo to Toby and pushed himself upright, sniffing the air. His face fell, clearly not pleased to inhale only the odor of dirty socks.

“No brownies?” he asked.

“Nope.” Toby nodded toward the milk-rimmed cereal bowl on the end table.

“Corn flakes was all I could find and I finished them. Mom has gotten way sloppy about after-school snacks.”

Marc stood and smacked his flat stomach. “I can’t handle football training with no food in me. Better head home.”

Toby laid Gabrielle’s photo beside the cereal bowl and stood, brushing grains of dirt from his hands. He grabbed his back pack.

“I can’t hang out, anyway. S’posed to have shorter hair before Dad comes home tonight.”

“Got your orders, I take it.” Marc trailed Toby to the door.

“I saw Lydia,” Marc added, “half her skull shaved bald. Cute on her. But it does make your hair seem very long.”

“Geez, can you believe it?”

Toby snorted with disgust as he pulled the condo door open. “I’m supposed to look like some crew-cut retard from the fifties and she gets to wear that freaky do.”

“You think it’s freaky?” Marc watched Toby lock the door. “Maybe I need a closer look.
